Simha.Aj@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Dr. Simha’s research focuses on lipodystrophy syndromes. These are a rare group of diseases characterized by selective fat loss and leading to severe metabolic complications. These complications are obesity, severe insulin resistance, diabetes, dyslipidemia and fatty liver disease. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of this fascinating disorder is likely to enhance our understanding and management of the more common metabolic syndrome associated with obesity.

Focus areas

  • Understand the genetic basis of lipodystrophy syndromes, especially familial partial lipodystrophy.
  • Understand the pathophysiology of metabolic disorders seen in people with lipodystrophy.
  • Investigate the safety and efficacy of novel therapeutic options for lipodystrophy.

Significance to patient care

People with lipodystrophy have extreme insulin resistance and metabolic problems that are generally difficult to treat with traditional therapies. These investigations aim to improve the management of people with the rare syndrome of lipodystrophy and also provide insight into the management of others with type 2 diabetes and obesity.
