Irene G. Sia, M.D., uses a community-based participatory research approach to address health issues affecting immigrants and refugees. She collaborates with community partners and researchers within and outside Mayo Clinic.

Focus areas

  • Immigrant and refugee health. Through partnerships with various community and academic institutions, Dr. Sia's research addresses health disparities affecting immigrants and refugees.
  • Community-based participatory research. Dr. Sia uses an investigative approach that equitably includes community partners in all phases of the research.

Dr. Sia hopes that through community-based participatory research, communities and researchers develop a better understanding of issues affecting the health of the community and thereby improve health care to achieve the common goal of health equity.
