Sheele.Johnathan@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

John M. Sheele, M.D., M.H.S., M.P.H., is an emergency medicine doctor. Dr. Sheele studies infectious diseases, global health and wilderness medicine. Much of Dr. Sheele's work involves the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of genitourinary tract infections, sexually transmitted infections and human parasites, such as bedbugs and ticks. Dr. Sheele also serves as the research director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida where he mentors and collaborates with other faculty on emergency medicine research.

Focus areas

  • Urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections are one of the most commonly diagnosed bacterial infections in the emergency department. Dr. Sheele studies ways that these infections are being diagnosed and managed. He is particularly interested in improving antimicrobial stewardship, more accurately diagnosing people with urinary tract infections and quickly treating those who are infected with appropriate antibiotics. He explores new approaches for both the rapid identification of urinary tract infections and antibiotic resistance.
  • Sexually transmitted infections. Dr. Sheele uses retrospective data to explore different associations with people infected with sexually transmitted infections and to identify ways to better diagnose and treat these individuals.
  • Parasitic infections, global health and wilderness medicine. Dr. Sheele is interested in parasites that are relevant to human health including Cimex lectularius, commonly known as bedbugs, ticks and schistosomiasis. He conducts research internationally and is active in both global health and wilderness medicine.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Sheele's research improves care for people with infectious diseases who come to the emergency department.
