Sener.Ugur@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Ugur T. Sener, M.D., specializes in the treatment of cancers arising from the central nervous system, as well as the neurological complications of systemic cancers. His research interests include the development of new therapeutics for patients with cancers of the brain and the spinal cord. Dr. Sener is an investigator in multiple clinical trials for patients with primary brain and spinal cord tumors including gliomas and meningiomas. He also is interested in leptomeningeal disease, which is the spread of cancer cells into the pia mater and arachnoid membranes.

Focus areas

  • Novel therapeutic development for primary brain and spine tumors. Dr. Sener is an investigator in multiple clinical trials assessing new treatment approaches for high-grade and low-grade gliomas as well as meningiomas.
  • Leptomeningeal disease. Dr. Sener has completed preclinical research characterizing how tumor cells gain access to, and thrive within, the leptomeningeal space. He is interested in trial development for this particularly challenging complication of cancer.
  • Clinical manifestations of primary and metastatic central nervous system tumors. Dr. Sener is engaged in research related to clinical complications related to nervous system tumors, including manifestations of rare central nervous system tumors and ischemic stroke related to cancer.

Significance to patient care

Despite multimodal treatment with surgery, radiation therapy and systemic therapeutics, outcomes for patients with many primary and metastatic central nervous system cancers remain poor, with patients frequently experiencing progressive neurological disability. Dr. Sener's research aims to understand clinical manifestations of primary and metastatic central nervous system tumors, as well as neurological complications of cancer and its treatment. His work also explores novel therapeutics with the goal of improving both overall survival and neurologic functional outcomes.
