Schumann.Matthew@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Matt E. Schumann, Ph.D., L.P., studies how psychosocial factors, such as pain-related thoughts, and behavioral and social responses to pain influence the management of chronic pain. His research also seeks to understand factors that contribute to improved pain rehabilitation outcomes. Dr. Schumann explores strategies to optimize nonpharmacological treatments for pain. His research also focuses on pain coping when both medical and mental health conditions are present.

Focus areas

  • Interdisciplinary pain rehabilitation. Dr. Schumann examines factors that contribute to meaningful improvements during and following pain rehabilitation treatment. He also studies ways to implement accessible, scalable and digital pain rehabilitation treatments to underserved populations.
  • Depression, anxiety, trauma and chronic pain. Dr. Schumann researches the bidirectional relationship between mental health conditions and chronic pain. He explores this relationship by evaluating ways in which depressive, anxiety and trauma symptoms respond in the context of pain treatment.
  • Health-and-pain-related beliefs. Dr. Schumann evaluates how cognitive styles and health attributions influence pain interference, coping and physical functioning.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Schumann's research enhances pain treatments by identifying modifiable factors that can contribute to decreased pain and improved functioning.
