SUMMARY

The research of Naiara Sbroggio Barbosa, M.D., focuses on better understanding the diagnosis, treatment and outcome of skin cancer and Mohs micrographic surgery.

She also studies the disparities in skin cancer care and outcomes for underserved populations.

Focus areas

  • Diagnosis, treatment and outcome of skin cancer. Dr. Barbosa's research focuses on understanding patient's knowledge about skin cancer and ways to improve early diagnosis and treatment of this malignancy.
  • Mohs micrographic surgery. Mohs surgery is the preferred treatment for a variety of skin cancers on the head and neck. Dr. Barbosa researches ways to optimize patient experience, tumor clearance and reconstruction outcomes in Mohs surgery.
  • Disparities in skin cancer care and outcomes for underserved populations. Dr. Barbosa studies the potential barriers and solutions to improve skin cancer care access for minority populations.

Significance to patient care

Skin cancers are very common and when diagnosed and treated promptly can lead to excellent outcomes. Dr. Barbosa's research continues to expand the knowledge and understanding of skin cancers and to improve patients' outcomes.

There are known skin cancer disparities and poorer outcomes for underserved and minoritized populations, but these issues have not been widely studied or addressed. Dr. Barbosa hopes her research will reduce these inequalities.
