Russi.Christopher@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Christopher S. Russi, D.O., focuses on emergency medicine. His main research interests are in digital transformation of emergency medicine, prehospital emergency care with telemedicine and remote monitoring.

Dr. Russi also served as a United States Army medical officer in a forward resuscitation surgical detachment. As an Army emergency medicine doctor, Dr. Russi provided care to wounded service members in far forward and austere environments.

Focus areas

  • Emergency medicine telemedicine. Dr. Russi studies the impact of emergency department use after emergency medicine consultation with nurse triage through phone lines.
  • Remote monitoring. Dr. Russi is developing a remote monitoring system for vital signs in the prehospital space. The remote monitoring system for telemedicine teams has digital eyes on critically ill patients being transported to emergency departments.
  • Wearable devices. Dr. Russi is partnering with Mayo Clinic engineering teams to study the use of wearables in the prehospital space. These wearables help in developing machine learning algorithms for the detection of clinical deterioration.

Significance to patient care

Telemedicine is rapidly expanding and hasn't fully reached the prehospital space. Linking a remote vital signs monitoring system to telemedicine teams may theoretically allow for real-time or near real-time collaboration with prehospital care teams. This is especially important for patients who have clinical deterioration in their conditions.
