Ringler.Michael@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research of Michael D. Ringler, M.D., primarily explores the development of new imaging techniques and evaluation of the utility of current radiologic exams and interventions, focusing on MRI and orthopedics. Additional areas of interest include radiologic characterization of rare diseases, health care informatics and education. Rapid improvement in patient care and quality of service is the primary goal, furthered by an emphasis on clinical research and mining of extant data for new evidence.

Focus areas

  • Application of MRI to detect musculoskeletal diseases involving athletic and chronic repetitive overuse injuries, including ligamentous injuries to the wrist and other joints and chronic exertional compartment syndrome
  • Development and evaluation of novel MRI techniques
  • Utilization of information technology in health care and its effect on efficiency and radiology report accuracy
  • Comparative effectiveness research, including critical evaluation of expensive imaging techniques and interventions
  • Orthopedic oncologic imaging

Significance to patient care

In this era of unsustainable health care expenditures, it is more important now than ever before to identify the particular diagnostic tests and interventions that have the greatest impact on health and well-being while curtailing their latent physical and financial costs. Dr. Ringler's research addresses both sides of this issue, seeking new, potentially useful diagnostic imaging exams, while also critically evaluating efficacy of existing techniques.
