SUMMARY

Aditya Raghunathan, M.D., M.P.H., is a practicing board-certified neuropathologist, with a clinical interest and research focus in the characterization of neoplastic and non-neoplastic neurological diseases affecting pediatric and adult patients. His main research interest is in the characterization of tumors of the central and peripheral nervous systems, including glioblastoma, lower grade gliomas, embryonal tumors, ependymomas, meningiomas and schwannomas. Dr. Raghunathan is also an active participant in multi-institutional collaborative research efforts.

Focus areas

  • Adult and pediatric brain tumors. Dr. Raghunathan has been involved in the evaluation of a spectrum of neuroepithelial tumors affecting adult and pediatric patients, with the primary aim of identifying histopathological features and genomic markers of prognostic or therapeutic significance.
  • Meningioma. Dr. Raghunathan and colleagues have been performing comprehensive clinical, pathological and genomic characterization of meningiomas, with the primary aim of identifying features associated with early recurrence and response to therapy.
  • Vestibular schwannoma. Dr. Raghunathan and colleagues evaluate vestibular schwannomas, with the primary aim of identifying clinical, histopathological and immunological features associated with recurrence risk and therapy response.

Significance to patient care

There are over 80,000 new cases of brain tumors diagnosed annually in the U.S., making it one of the most common types of cancer, particularly among pediatric patients. Dr. Raghunathan's research efforts are directed toward characterizing pathological and genomic features associated with patient outcomes and responses to therapy in a variety of brain tumors, as well as non-neoplastic neurological diseases. As part of collaborative, multidisciplinary teams seeking to better understand these entities, his work helps directly inform the care offered to current and future patients at Mayo Clinic and beyond.
