SUMMARY

The research interests of Alberto Pochettino, M.D., complement his clinical expertise in cardiovascular illnesses such as adult congenital heart disease, thoracic aortic aneurysm disease and mitral valve disease.

Dr. Pochettino focuses on developing and evaluating innovative and improved surgical treatments for cardiovascular diseases. In particular, he is interested in cardiac mechanical assist devices, pulmonary thromboendarterectomy, and heart and lung transplantation.

Focus areas

  • Outcomes of coronary bypass surgery. Dr. Pochettino is studying early outcomes after coronary bypass surgery, with a particular focus on patients with poor left ventricular function.
  • Aortic valve surgery. He is working to evaluate the usefulness and value of continuous electroencephalography for patients undergoing complex aortic valve surgery.
  • Aortic arch surgery. He is also the lead investigator of a retrospective study looking at the use of varying techniques for cerebral protection in aortic arch surgery.
  • Bleeding risk and blood transfusions. Dr. Pochettino recently served as the program director and principal investigator on a retrospective chart review study to investigate bleeding risk and blood transfusion requirements in patients undergoing complex cardiovascular surgery.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Pochettino's long-term goal in both his research and clinical practice is to better serve patients with cardiovascular diseases by developing and applying surgical approaches to improve overall outcomes.
