SUMMARY

The research of Maggie M. Paul, Ph.D., designs and conducts evaluations of interventions to address health disparities in adult and pediatric clinical settings. She has expertise in survey-based research, qualitative methods and implementation science.

Dr. Paul uses qualitative and quantitative approaches in her research to study intervention design, effectiveness and real-world adaptations that occur in order to facilitate replication and sustainability of effective interventions in a variety of clinical contexts.

Focus areas

  • Identifying health care delivery models for artificial intelligence (AI)-based interventions. AI-based interventions are being developed at a rapid pace and have the potential to improve health care quality and outcomes while reducing staff burden. Dr. Paul's research program includes several studies on identifying health care delivery models to integrate such interventions into practice.

She studies implementation and clinical outcomes to ensure that they are useful and sustainable in day-to-day clinical care.

  • Clinically meaningful use of social risk factor data. There is increasing support and momentum behind the movement to identify and integrate social risk factor data in electronic health records.

Dr. Paul studies the effectiveness of such programs as well as the identification of implementation strategies that place as little burden as possible on patients, providers and staff. She evaluates how the data are used to improve health care quality and patient outcomes.

  • Telehealth and remote monitoring to improve chronic disease management. Telehealth has advanced and continues to evolve at an astonishing rate. Dr. Paul studies barriers and facilitators to the adoption of new practices among clinicians.

She is particularly interested in understanding the impact of telehealth practices on utilization and clinical outcomes, as well as provider and patient-reported outcomes.

  • Identifying pragmatic pathways to improve quality metrics in clinical practice. Clinicians and health systems are under increasing pressure to improve and maintain high performance on health care quality and outcome metrics. Dr. Paul studies pragmatic interventions and tools to support practices toward reaching this goal and identifying pathways to implementing effective interventions.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Paul evaluates interventions to address disparities in health care quality and outcomes. As a collaborative scientist in the Kern Center, her research questions are often driven by issues identified by clinicians. The overall goal of her research program is to identify pragmatic and feasible approaches to integrate advances in technology and data into routine care.
