SUMMARY

Akhilesh Pandey, M.D, Ph.D., a clinical pathologist, leads the Systems Biology and Translational Medicine Laboratory as well as the mass spectrometry assay development efforts in the Advanced Diagnostics Laboratory at Mayo Clinic. He is an international leader in applying multiomics technologies including proteomics, metabolomics and lipidomics, genomics, and bioinformatics to solve biomedical research problems. His multidisciplinary laboratory includes molecular biologists, chemists, mass spectrometrists, computational biologists and physician-scientists who investigate genetic disorders, cancers and infectious diseases. He is also the director of the Proteomics Core at Mayo Clinic.

Focus areas

  • Molecular mechanisms in multiple myeloma.
  • Glycobiology and glycomic biomarkers for congenital disorders of glycosylation.
  • Signal transduction and cancer.
  • Biomarker discovery and assay development.
  • Single cell proteomics.
  • Mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and lipidomics.

Significance to patient care

Collectively, the efforts of Dr. Pandey's multidisciplinary team are expected to have a significant impact on patient care through improved diagnostics and novel biomarkers. Identifying predictive markers of resistance to immunomodulatory drug (IMiD)-based therapies in multiple myeloma will allow tailored therapies for patients. Advanced technologies for single-cell proteomics can usher in a new era for precision medicine. His team develops novel mass spectrometry-based glycoproteomics and glycomics assays for congenital disorders of glycosylation. Using these assays can improve diagnoses for patients with suspected congenital disorders of glycosylation (CDGs). His work also involves the testing and monitoring of novel therapies to improve patient outcomes.
