SUMMARY
The research interests of Michael D. Osborne, M.D., directly complement his clinical practice in pain medicine. Specifically, Dr. Osborne is interested in stimulation of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves in patients with severe neuropathic pain. He is also interested in investigating the effectiveness of multidisciplinary cognitive behavioral therapy for intractable chronic pain.
In addition to his research activities and clinical practice, Dr. Osborne serves as the program director of the Pain Medicine Fellowship at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida.
Focus areas
- Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) lead migration. Dr. Osborne has developed an imaging protocol for investigating trial SCS lead migration in order to improve outcomes for SCS implantations.
- Radiofrequency lesioning safety protocol. Additional work involves safety guidelines for radiofrequency lesioning in patients with deep brain neurostimulators.
- Multidisciplinary cognitive behavioral therapy (MCBT). Dr. Osborne's current research involves evaluating the effectiveness of MCBT for intractable pain disorders such as failed back surgery syndrome and fibromyalgia.
- Spinal cord stimulation clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Osborne was part of a multispecialty group assembled to provide practice guidelines for the use of spinal cord stimulation in the United States.
