SUMMARY

Diana M. Orbelo, Ph.D., studies the human voice from multiple viewpoints — focusing on understanding behavioral, interoceptive, neurological and musculoskeletal aspects of phonation. She searches for novel behavioral voice approaches to enhance human communication and connection.

Focus areas

  • Behavioral voice treatment: Exploring perception and production in treatment of voices in singers and speakers with voice disorders, including muscle tension dysphonia, spasmodic dysphonia, issues of gender congruence and related issues with breathing.
  • Clinical care: Investigating the role of speech-language pathology services in patients who undergo voice-related surgeries, such as those with unilateral vocal fold paralysis who undergo medialization laryngoplasty.
  • Voice-enabled artificial intelligence: Working with colleagues to understand the role and benefits of artificial intelligence when used to study vocal quality in context of other medical illnesses.

Dr. Orbelo's work is directly motivated and informed by her ongoing experience in patient care. Listening to her patients provides opportunities for research directed at helping patients live full communicatory lives and share their voices through singing or speaking.
