SUMMARY

The main research interest of Patrick W. O'Leary, M.D., is pediatric and congenital cardiology. Dr. O'Leary is the director of the imaging and outcomes team in the Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). The program's goal is to launch clinical trials in cell-based therapy for ventricular dysfunction in HLHS and other serious cardiac diseases. Dr. O'Leary's team focuses on defining the determinants of long-term outcomes in people with HLHS and developing new ways to assess right ventricular performance in people with complex congenital cardiac malformations.

Focus areas

  • Echocardiography of children with cardiac disorders. Dr. O'Leary's echocardiographic laboratory has established programs evaluating the relationships among:
    • Cardiac anatomy, function and clinical outcome.
    • Diastolic cardiac performance in children.
    • Telemedical transmission systems and their application in pediatric echocardiography and cardiology.
    • The intraoperative use of echocardiography.
    • New technology in echocardiography, such as intracardiac, multidimensional and parametric systems.
  • Cardiology and congenital heart disease. Dr. O'Leary's background is in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology. He also has a strong interest in studying congenital heart disease in adults.

Significance to patient care

Mayo Clinic's integrated cardiology practice allows for many interdisciplinary research opportunities. This allows Dr. O'Leary to contribute to a multitude of collaborative studies — usually those focused on patient management strategies and outcome assessments.
