Niesen.Adam@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Adam D. Niesen, M.D., is an anesthesiologist with fellowship training in regional anesthesia. Dr. Niesen is interested in both regional and obstetric anesthesia. He is particularly focused on the use of ultrasound for nerve blocks of the spine, chest and abdomen, and in training the next generation of anesthesiologists through resident education.

Focus areas

  • Paravertebral blocks
  • Ultrasound for spinal and epidural (neuraxial) procedures
  • Complications of regional anesthesia

Significance to patient care

Regional anesthesia is useful to allow patients to undergo surgery with less pain. This typically allows for shorter hospital stays, a reduced need for narcotic pain medications and fewer side effects. Ultrasound guidance may help anesthesiologists perform these pain-relieving procedures more accurately, safely and with smaller doses of medicine.
