Muzyka.Iryna@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research interests of Iryna M. Muzyka, M.D., are focused on neurophysiology and intraoperative monitoring that uses a combination of nervous tissue response to stimulation, imaging techniques, biophysics and artificial intelligence approaches. The resulting data are analyzed to achieve a better understanding of the connections between different areas of the brain and between the brain, the spine and the peripheral nerves.

Focus areas

  • Intraoperative monitoring. Dr. Muzyka focuses on applying different techniques for brain, spine and peripheral nerve mapping and monitoring, and nervous-tissue preservation and recovery.
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Dr. Muzyka is investigating the use of AI in intraoperative monitoring and neurophysiology.
  • Monitoring modalities. Dr. Muzyka is discovering innovative ways to advance current monitoring modalities. She is making progress by adopting collaborative and multidisciplinary approaches.

Significance to patient care

Keeping neural functions intact during surgery improves postsurgical prognosis and recovery as well as patient quality of life. Gaining a better understanding of how connections work between different areas of the brain has helped create surgery-specific tailored approaches that can more accurately predict clinical outcomes for patients. With the help of ongoing research and multidisciplinary collaborations, Dr. Muzyka and her colleagues can continue to develop new surgical strategies and approaches for patients.
