SUMMARY

The research interest of Steven L. Moran, M.D., focuses on the use of regenerative medicine for reconstruction of skin and tendon defects, vascularized composite allotransplantation of the hand and face, as well as the cause and treatment of wrist arthritis. Dr. Moran's clinical practice focuses on disorders of the upper extremity as well as microsurgical reconstruction of traumatic and oncologic defects, with primary interests in congenital hand surgery and wrist arthritis.

Dr. Moran is the present chair of the Division of Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery and the surgical director of hand transplantation at Mayo Clinic's Essam and Dalal Obaid Center for Reconstructive Transplant Surgery.

Focus areas

  • Research into wound and tendon healing, with specific focus on the role of cytokines and growth factors
  • Research examining biomechanics of the wrist following injury
  • Research into regenerative medicine, specifically the regeneration of skin and tendon with the use of spherically engineered bioscaffolds that accelerate wound healing
  • Research into the limb function following hand transplantation

Significance to patient care

Dr. Moran's research searches for ways to allow for healing of wounds without the need for skin grafting and tendon grafting. His research also looks for ways to maximize function following hand transplantation and upper limb surgery.
