Moore.Eric@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Eric J. Moore, M.D., has a special interest in the surgical treatment of tumors of the parotid gland, tonsils and base of tongue. Dr. Moore's research concentrations include novel deintensification strategies to treat oropharyngeal cancer, novel approaches to transoral robotic surgery, improvement in facial cosmesis and function after parotid gland surgery, and innovations in microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck.

Focus areas

  • Parotid gland surgery. Minimally invasive exposure to the parotid gland, parotid bed reconstruction, outcomes of parotid cancer surgery, and reconstruction of the facial nerve after parotid cancer surgery.
  • Transoral robotic surgery. Assisted in the original FDA approval of robotic surgery for head and neck cancer, and he continues to research new approaches to transoral robotic surgery.
  • Oropharyngeal cancer. Deintensification of treatment for HPV-related oropharynx cancer in an effort to improve patient function while maintaining oncologic effectiveness of treatment.
  • Microvascular reconstruction. Use of computer modeling and 3-D printing to improve the efficiency and outcomes of microvascular reconstruction in patients with head and neck defects caused by cancer surgery or trauma.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Moore's research focuses on improving the appearance and function of patients undergoing head and neck surgery. His efforts are focused on minimizing incisions, maintaining normal tissue and improving reconstructions to make the patient whole again. Dr. Moore is actively involved in clinical trials to de-intensify treatment of head and neck cancer in an effort to improve quality of life without sacrificing excellent outcomes.
