SUMMARY

The research interests of Ian R. McPhail, M.D., center on invasive and noninvasive assessment of peripheral vascular function, with particular attention to use of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters. Dr. McPhail is also interested in the pathophysiology of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Dr. McPhail's research foci complement his clinical interests in cardiovascular disease and interventional radiology.

Focus areas

Dr. McPhail focuses on and teaches about developments in:

  • Intermittent claudication. National Institutes of Health-funded research compares prescribed exercise with endoluminal revascularization as therapy for claudication.
  • Venous thromboembolism. Dr. McPhail has focused on the role of thrombolytic therapy and IVC filters in the management of venous thromboembolism.
  • Novel intervenous technologies. Current research includes work on retrievable IVC filters, translumbar central venous catheters and superior vena cava angioplasty.

Significance to patient care

Dr. McPhail's goal is to incorporate research, teaching and clinical practice to improve treatment and outcomes for patients with cardiovascular disease.
