Sarayna S. McGuire, M.D., is an emergency and emergency medical services doctor and health sciences researcher. • Mitigating workplace violence in healthcare. Dr. McGuire studies the incidence and impact of workplace violence experienced by multidisciplinary emergency department staff. She researches the barriers to recognizing and reporting violent events in healthcare from the perspectives of both healthcare and law enforcement professionals. Dr. McGuire collaborates with many local and national groups to share data and works toward solutions for workplace violence in healthcare. She is currently pursuing several projects seeking to determine risk factors for violence in the prehospital setting. Dr. McGuire uses data from emergency departments and prehospital settings to improve workplace violence prevention and mitigation strategies across the entire healthcare setting.
• Emerging use of automated systems and AI. Dr. McGuire is interested in increasing the use of automation, machine learning and AI within healthcare to benefit patients and staff. She is leading a study to automate reporting of violent events experienced by emergency department and prehospital staff. This automatic reporting may reduce staff administrative burden and increase knowledge of violent events to drive future prevention and mitigation efforts. Dr. McGuire and colleagues are using AI to review large datasets to look for recurring trends related to violent events in healthcare.
• Improving systems communication and collaboration. Dr. McGuire is interested in improving systems for collaboration and communication, particularly between the prehospital and hospital environments, to benefit patient outcomes. She created a large and successful protected health information-compliant feedback and follow-up program for emergency medical services transporting people to Mayo Clinic sites. Dr. McGuire studies the use and benefits of this program. She also provides consultations to other emergency medical services agencies and healthcare institutions seeking to replicate the program. Dr. McGuire conducts research seeking to expand care outside the traditional hospital setting, such as in the prehospital setting, to improve patient outcomes.

Significance to patient care

Dr. McGuire's research tries to transform healthcare by improving care of people in the prehospital setting before they reach the emergency department. She strives to improve collaboration and communication between the prehospital and hospital settings. Her research into severe agitation in patients and workplace violence aims to quickly identify those at risk of experiencing violence. This early identification may allow for more efficient and effective de-escalation, benefitting both individuals and healthcare staff.
