The research of Amit K. Mathur, M.D., focuses on improving access to care, clinical outcomes, and health care delivery in surgery, cancer, end organ failure and transplantation. Dr. Mathur is interested in variation in health care utilization in the areas of organ donation, organ allocation, organ utilization, costs of transplant care and quality-of-life issues.

Focus areas

• Health care utilization and quality of care in transplantation. Dr. Mathur's interest in this area includes elucidating mechanisms behind variation in practice patterns in many areas of solid organ transplantation, how this contributes to variation in clinical outcomes and how this affects transplant quality measurement.
• Health disparities in access to care and outcomes in end organ failure and transplantation. Dr. Mathur has a long-standing area of interest in health disparities in the continuum of care from chronic organ dysfunction, diagnosis with end organ failure, through transplantation and beyond. Dr. Mathur has evaluated this continuum most extensively in studying the roles of race, ethnicity and sex in liver disease and liver transplant care in the United States.
• Surgical outcomes in complex surgery. Dr. Mathur studies clinical outcomes in complex surgery such as hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery and transplant surgery using a multitude of analytic approaches including cohort studies, clinical registries and administrative claims.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Mathur's research will improve patient care in several ways. Evaluating health care utilization in transplantation has direct implications in providing appropriate care and optimizing patient-centered outcomes. Dr. Mathur's work on health care disparities will help identify interventions to improve health care equity in end organ failure and transplant care. His surgical outcomes studies have direct implications to incrementally improve surgical practice.
