SUMMARY

The main research interest of Mary M. Machulda, Ph.D., L.P., is the study of cognitive changes associated with aging and different types of dementia. Dr. Machulda is part of two multidisciplinary research teams consisting of members from the Department of Psychiatry and Psychology, the Department of Neurology, the Mayo Clinic Study of Aging, the Aging and Dementia Imaging Laboratory, and the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

Focus areas

  • Aphasia and apraxia of speech. Dr. Machulda is particularly interested in the cognitive characteristics and neuroimaging correlates of the major variants of primary progressive aphasia and primary progressive apraxia of speech.
  • Cognitive impairment. A second area of focus is the cognitive changes associated with aging and how these and other factors might predict who will develop cognitive impairment in the future.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Machulda's research will help with understanding the cognitive and brain changes associated with normal aging and early dementia, and with identifying candidates for early medical treatment when effective treatments become available.
