SUMMARY

The research of Timothy D. Lyon, M.D., centers on improving the lives of people with bladder cancer. He is engaged in clinical and healthcare delivery research focusing on improving access, quality and delivery of bladder cancer care. Dr. Lyon studies the safety and efficacy of novel urothelial cancer treatments in multiple clinical trials.

Focus areas

  • Care delivery for bladder cancer. Dr. Lyon studies patterns of healthcare delivery for people with bladder cancer. He has a particular focus on developing and optimizing new strategies to improve the individual's experience of care. This includes novel methods of delivering bladder cancer care in more people-centered ways as well as efforts aimed at improving equitable access to care.
  • Clinical trials of new therapies for urothelial carcinoma. Dr. Lyon contributes to many clinical trials investigating new therapies to treat cancer of the cells that line the inside of the bladder and upper urinary tract. This cancer is called urothelial carcinoma.

Significance to patient care

Bladder cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in the United States, and usually occurs in older people with coexisting medical problems. This combination of factors increases the complexity of caring for individuals with bladder cancer. There are wide variations in the quality of care delivered for bladder cancer across the United States.

Dr. Lyon and his colleagues focus on identifying people and provider-level features associated with the delivery of high-quality bladder cancer care. They use these insights to create and disseminate strategies to improve the delivery of care for individuals with bladder cancer.
