SUMMARY

Kaiser G. Lim, M.D., studies the roles of eosinophils in asthma and allergies. Dr. Lim's pulmonary clinical research also focuses on airway diseases of the lungs. In particular:

  • Chronic disease management of asthma.
  • Pathophysiology and diagnostic approaches to chronic cough.
  • Tracheobronchomalacia.
  • Reduction in hospital readmissions of patients after COPD episodes.

Dr. Lim's additional research interests include:

  • Pulmonary physiology in health and disease.
  • Exercise physiology.
  • Pulmonary function testing.
  • The management of severe persistent asthma.
  • The interaction of the upper airways with asthma, tracheobronchomalacia and exhaled nitric oxide.

Focus areas

  • Nitric oxide and airway diseases. Dr. Lim studies the role of oral and nasal exhaled nitric oxide in the management of asthma and chronic rhinosinusitis. Additionally, he researches the role of exhaled nitric oxide in identification of eosinophilic bronchitis in chronic cough.
  • Population-based chronic disease management. Dr. Lim and his colleagues have investigated the role of electronic prompts, standardized questionnaires and biomarkers in asthma and COPD.
  • Quality improvement in hospitalized patients. Dr. Lim and his colleagues have designed several projects to improve sleep, pain management, COPD readmissions and early detection of clinical deterioration in patients admitted to the hospital.
  • Pulmonary and exercise physiology in health and diseases. Dr. Lim and his colleagues are involved in further understanding the pulmonary physiology behind pulmonary function tests in health and disease. He also is engaged in studying the changes in lung function during gender transition.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Lim has emphasized the use of objective clinical assessment tools to ensure quality care delivery to patients in the ambulatory care and hospital settings. Biomarkers and validated standardized questionnaires can reduce variances in diagnosis and clinical decision-making. These tools provide sustainable long-term quality care of patients with respiratory and airway diseases.
