SUMMARY

The research of Tobias Kummer, M.D., focuses on the use of ultrasound at the point of care in emergent situations and critically ill or injured patients. He has a particular interest in advanced ultrasound techniques such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound and procedural ultrasound.

Focus areas

  • Contrast-enhanced ultrasound in acute trauma. Dr. Kummer is developing protocols and techniques to enhance the diagnostic capabilities of ultrasound for acutely injured adult and pediatric patients such as rapid detection of abdominal organ injuries, intraabdominal bleeding or evaluation of soft tissue hematomas.
  • Ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia in acutely injured patients. Dr. Kummer is part of a multidisciplinary team investigating new ways for early pain control in injured patients using ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia.
  • Ultrasound-guided vascular access. Dr. Kummer is leading investigations to improve vascular access in patients with failed traditional intravenous (IV) access.

Significance to patient care

For patients with acute trauma, rapid identification of injury and ongoing bleeding are crucial for improving patient outcomes. Point-of-care ultrasound can help shorten the time to diagnosis and treatment. Using advanced ultrasound techniques such as contrast-enhanced ultrasound improves diagnostic capabilities at the bedside to a level that would have previously required more-advanced imaging, such as computerized tomography.

Ultrasound has also been shown to improve procedure performance and provide precision that far surpasses traditional nonimage-guided techniques. This can improve procedures such as IV access or assist for early pain control in injured patients.
