Kumar.Gyanendra@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Gyanendra Kumar, M.D., is a vascular neurologist within the Division of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases. His interest is in the field of stroke neurology and cerebrovascular disorders. Areas explored include cerebral hemodynamics, cryptogenic stroke and quantitative nonexperimental research.

Focus areas

  • Cerebral hemodynamics. Dr. Kumar is using transcranial Doppler ultrasonography to study metrics such as mean flow velocities, pulsatility indices, vasomotor reactivity, right-to-left shunting and microembolic signal detection, in the gamut of cerebrovascular disease processes.
  • Cryptogenic stroke, especially in young patients. Dr. Kumar is studying elusive mechanisms of stroke in those without an etiologic diagnosis.
  • Data compilation. Dr. Kumar's quantitative nonexperimental pooling of research data is improving the strength of scientific evidence pertaining to cerebrovascular diseases.

Significance to patient care

Stroke is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. While the risk of stroke increases with age, recent data have shown that incidence of stroke is rising in young people. The cause of stroke in many of these patients remains elusive. Dr. Kumar hopes that research into elucidating the causes of stroke will help treat the underlying mechanisms, impact patient care in a positive way and help people who have had strokes return to leading productive lives.
