SUMMARY

The research interests of Amy Kotsenas, M.D., include advances in new digital technology to improve diagnoses and care for people. This ensures the availability of diagnostic information at the right time and right place for the right people. These advances promote ethical use of new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Dr. Kotsenas also explores how these technologies are used to educate individuals, their families and other healthcare professionals across the globe.

Focus areas

  • Interoperability of diagnostic imaging. Dr. Kotsenas leads a team that focuses on identifying technology that allows seamless transmission of radiology images and reports without requiring people to purchase and transport CDs to follow-up appointments.
  • Ethics of new technology such as AI in medicine. Dr. Kotsenas and her colleagues are interested in the perspectives people have on the use of AI in their diagnoses and treatments. She studies how and when an individual's medical information may be used in creating new AI algorithms and how to best obtain consent for these purposes.
  • Use of social media in healthcare. Dr. Kotsenas explores using social media as an aid to educate people, their families and healthcare professionals around the globe. She also explores how to use this technology in new ways to network with like-minded researchers.

Significance to patient care

New technology is created every day and has tremendous potential to positively impact patient care and outcomes. Dr. Kotsenas' goal is to ensure that this technology is implemented in safe, responsible and transparent ways that benefit individuals, their families and their healthcare teams.

Quality improvements and advances in interoperability of technology have improved the exchange of medical data and health records. These improvements and advances allow for digital transmission and access to health record data at the time and place of each care episode. Thus, there is no need to copy paper charts, burn CDs of radiology exams or remember to carry this information to appointments in hard copy format.
