Klinkner.Denise@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Denise B. Klinkner, M.D., M.Ed., seeks to identify best practices in pediatric surgical and trauma care. When the better option is not clear, that topic becomes a focus to ensure optimal care. Because she serves as medical director of the Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center, trauma-related projects are a large part of her research.

Dr. Klinkner also studies chest wall deformities, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and fetal surgery topics. In collaboration with Rodrigo Ruano, M.D., Ph.D., in Mayo Clinic's Division of Maternal and Fetal Medicine, she applies novel approaches to complex cases.

Focus areas

  • Tracheal occlusion for management of severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia
  • Outcomes for surgical management of chest wall deformities
  • Optimal surgical care for pediatric IBD

Significance to patient care

Tracheal occlusion has demonstrated a decreased need for extracorporeal life support in severe cases and improved survival. By reviewing outcomes of chest wall deformities, Dr. Klinkner can identify the best procedure for an individual at the best time. Finally, for children with IBD, her research may result in their being able to avoid unnecessary stages.
