Khoury.Julie@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Research areas of interest for Julie A. Khoury, M.D., encompass neuromuscular disorders and autonomic disorders. Dr. Khoury has a particular interest in the intersection of these disorders, which occurs with various forms of amyloidosis, both acquired and hereditary.

Focus areas

  • Neuromuscular disorders. Dr. Khoury investigates inflammatory myopathies, genetic myopathies, muscular dystrophies, myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome and inflammatory peripheral neuropathies.
  • Autonomic disorders. Within this group, Dr. Khoury studies autonomic neuropathy and pure autonomic failure.

Significance to patient care

Patients with amyloidosis often experience delays in diagnosis. Several effective treatments for various forms of amyloidosis are available. But early recognition and coordinated, multidisciplinary care are critical to improved outcomes.

Neurophysiology, the backbone of neurology, is critical to the diagnosis of various neurological conditions. Many residency programs fail to emphasize neurophysiology education. This results in reduced access to needed testing for patients with neurological conditions. To remedy this, Dr. Khoury's research highlights the importance of neurophysiology training in residency programs to improve testing access.
