SUMMARY

Zaraq Khan, M.B.B.S., studies patient outcomes after common gynecologic surgeries. His research includes looking at the impact of hysterectomy on women in the long term and evaluating fertility outcomes after surgeries for endometriosis and fibroids.

Dr. Khan also studies the role of ovarian tissue cryopreservation and transplantation and its role as a means of fertility preservation in women and prepubescent girls. Additionally, he has special interest in uterine transplantation and is currently evaluating its role as a means of providing fertility to women with absolute uterine factor infertility.

Focus areas

  • Long-term outcomes of hysterectomy with ovarian conservation. Using the Rochester Epidemiology Project, Dr. Khan is evaluating the long-term consequences of this common gynecologic procedure on women.
  • Fertility outcomes after fibroid and endometriosis surgery. Fibroids and endometriosis are commonly seen in women of reproductive age, and the role of these conditions in causing infertility is controversial. Dr. Khan is evaluating the role of endometriosis and fibroid surgery for fertility enhancement.
  • Ovarian tissue cryopreservation in young girls and adult females. Dr. Khan is assessing the role of ovarian tissue cryopreservation as a means of fertility preservation in premenarchal girls as well as women undergoing therapy that would be gonadotoxic and could result in sterility.
  • Uterine transplantation. Dr. Khan is assessing the feasibility of uterine transplantation as a means of providing fertility to women with absolute uterine factor infertility. These are women who are born without a uterus or those who have lost their uterus as a traumatic event, from cancer or an obstetrical complication.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Khan focuses his research on relevant and common medical problems that affect women of reproductive age. His research on long-term outcomes of hysterectomy adds new knowledge to the existing body of literature. Dr. Khan's work on assessing the role of fertility-enhancing reproductive surgery is resulting in more awareness and timely treatment of common conditions such as fibroids and endometriosis. Finally, Dr. Khan's investigative work in the field of reproductive organ transplantation is not only novel but creates a unique tertiary care referral for women seeking fertility preservation and enhancement in rare circumstances.
