SUMMARY

Dan P. Kelleher, Ph.D., studies health economics, health services research, preference elicitation methodology and econometric modeling. Dr. Kelleher applies his expertise across various clinical, economic and health policy areas at Mayo Clinic. His research examines factors that affect the supply and demand of health and healthcare and the aspects of healthcare interventions or practices that are most important to people and healthcare professionals.

Dr. Kelleher's research primarily focuses on addressing research questions related to two key Mayo Clinic priority areas: supporting the healthcare workforce and improving levels of health equity at Mayo Clinic.

Focus areas

  • The nursing work environment. Dr. Kelleher assesses how nurses want to prioritize improvements in their work environment to reduce burnout and increase well-being. To study this topic, he conducts mixed-methods research that examines nursing preferences and perspectives. Dr. Kelleher strives to understand what aspects of the work environment nurses value the most and where they would value improvements.
  • Immigrant and minority patient healthcare. Dr. Kelleher has expertise on health-related behaviors of immigrants and assesses how immigrant patients and patients with language barriers access and use healthcare services at Mayo Clinic. He uses econometric methods and electronic health record data to examine how these services are used.
  • Quantifying patients and healthcare professional preferences. Dr. Kelleher is an expert on using stated preference methods, such as discrete choice experiment methods, which elicit individual and healthcare professional preferences for different healthcare interventions. Such research helps the practice understand the specific aspects of certain healthcare interventions that are the most important for patients and healthcare professionals at Mayo Clinic.
  • Economic evaluation of healthcare interventions. Dr. Kelleher assesses the effectiveness of healthcare interventions at Mayo Clinic using various comparators, outcome measures, econometric methods and electronic health record data.
  • Patient-reported outcome measures. Dr. Kelleher assesses patient-reported outcome measures at Mayo Clinic using econometric methods and various standardized patient-reported outcome measures.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Kelleher's findings allow policy initiatives to improve healthcare delivery, quality and access and reduce burnout among the healthcare workforce at Mayo Clinic and elsewhere. His research findings can be used to prioritize improvements in the nursing work environment to reduce burnout. His studies highlight how immigrants use care at Mayo Clinic, which can increase access to care for these individuals.

Dr. Kelleher demonstrates the success of certain healthcare interventions that promote further use or access to such interventions for more people at Mayo Clinic. His work informs decision-makers about the features of healthcare interventions or practices that are the most important to individuals and healthcare professionals. Dr. Kelleher's research helps decision-makers better incorporate these preferences into policy and practice changes.
