SUMMARY

Nina J. Karlin, M.D., conducts clinical research focused on the relationship between cancer and diabetes, as well as on geriatric oncology. She is involved in clinical trials related to several types of cancer.

Focus areas

Dr. Karlin is studying the interaction of cancer and diabetes. Along with collaborators in the Division of Endocrinology and the Division of Biostatistics, she has retrospectively examined the prevalence of diabetes mellitus, level of glycemic control and the impact of diabetes mellitus on overall survival in cancer patients.

Dr. Karlin is now pursuing a project titled "Cancer patients with diabetes: defining the population and assessing outcomes." This research was made possible through a benefactor-funded career development award.

In addition, Dr. Karlin has an interest in geriatric oncology and conducts clinical trials in breast cancer, ovarian cancer and thyroid cancer.

Significance to patient care

This research will ultimately assist with the development of algorithms to improve the care and outcomes of patients with cancer and co-existing diabetes.
