Celia C. Kamath, Ph.D., is an investigator with Mayo Clinic's Office of Health Disparities Research. Her research focuses on improving health care for underserved communities. To accomplish this, Dr. Kamath uses a mixed methods approach. Her emphasis on implementation incorporates science-based intervention design and analysis.

Focus areas

• Enabling health care equity. Dr. Kamath uses research and future intervention development to foster health care equity. She applies implementation science, community-based participatory research techniques and mixed methods to evaluate proposed solutions for issues associated with area-based disparities, socioeconomic status (SES), rural and underserved patient outreach, and digital access and literacy.
• Facilitating patient adherence to treatment. Dr. Kamath's research seeks to encourage effective cost conversations between patients and clinicians in health care encounters.
• Optimizing access, reach and equity in primary care delivery of health services. Dr. Kamath employs effective care delivery models and technology outreach, based on foundations of implementation science, to improve care access and promote equity. For example, she has applied these methods to the study of chronic kidney disease treatment and alcohol use disorders.
• Enhancing patient and clinician experiences in the digital transformation of health care. Dr. Kamath examines clinical and geographical context, social and work dynamics, and the interface with changing clinical applications to improve uptake and equity associated with digital transformations in health care. By applying implementation science frameworks and theory, she seeks to enable a smoother digital transformation of health care in select specialties.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Kamath's research works to address the gaps in optimal care access for diverse and underserved populations. By utilizing implementation science theory and mixed methods, she can tackle area-based disparities, SES, affordability and digital access deficiencies. These approaches provide insights into future intervention development. She has worked with several multidisciplinary teams across many clinical areas to provide insights into care delivery processes and models for high-quality and equitable patient care.
