SUMMARY

Lan Jiang, Ph.D., is a health care system engineering researcher who integrates principles and approaches from system engineering, operations research and data science to solve various problems in complex health care systems. Her projects include using artificial intelligence for pain medication triage decisions in consultation and procedure, designing emergency department staffing to optimize patient experience, and developing a decision-support tool to evaluate operational strategy, among others.

Dr. Jiang's research aims to continuously enhance the delivery, quality and efficiency of health care services. She is particularly interested in applying machine learning models to extract insights from complex health care data sets, predict patient and operational outcomes, and automate various tasks in health care.

Focus areas

  • Machine learning approaches in health care. Dr. Jiang's research focuses on the application of machine learning approaches and engineering methodologies for quality and performance improvement in different areas. She also investigates novel approaches to address the challenges associated with health care data, such as imbalanced data, small sample size and other issues. She developed machine learning models in various projects, such as a prediction model to automate pain medication triage decisions for consultation and procedure and machine learning techniques. These are used to identify impacting factors of routine screening behavior at both individual and organizational levels for health care professionals.
  • Decision-support tools in health care operation. Dr. Jiang's research also involves applying simulation, optimization and data analytics techniques to improve efficiency and resource allocation in health care operations. Her work has included building simulation models to evaluate staffing strategies and developing decision-support tools for effective decision-making. By leveraging these techniques, her research helps professionals in health care systems identify opportunities for improvement and implement effective strategies to enhance patient care delivery.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Jiang's research promotes both the effectiveness and the efficiency of health care delivery systems, ultimately resulting in improved access to care and higher quality of care for patients.
