SUMMARY

Mayo Clinic researcher Dawn E. Jaroszewski, M.D., studies thoracic surgery, including minimally invasive esophagectomy, lung cancer surgery, surgery for coccidioidomycosis, lung infections and other lung problems. Her primary area of focus and expertise is in chest wall deformities and the cardiopulmonary effects of pectus excavatum deformities. Dr. Jaroszewski shares her knowledge with the world. She has participated in hundreds of research projects, book publications, abstracts, national and international presentations, and journal publications.

Focus areas

  • Thoracic surgery. Dr. Jaroszewski focuses on esophageal cancer, minimally invasive esophageal surgery, lung cancer treatment, minimally invasive resection of lung cancer, carcinoid lung cancer, diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia, video-assisted thoracoscopic diaphragm plication, video-assisted thoracoscopic sympathectomy for hyperhidrosis, treatment of pulmonary coccidioidomycosis and lung fungal infections.
  • Chest wall and pectus deformities. Dr. Jaroszewski's research pertains to the surgical treatment of pectus excavatum, pectus carinatum deformities, the genetics of pectus deformities, cardiopulmonary implications of pectus deformities, surgical outcomes and the cardiopulmonary benefits of surgery. She engages in the optimal testing and symptom monitoring of adults with pectus deformities. Dr. Jaroszewski researches surgical technique modifications for superior surgical outcomes.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Jaroszewski serves as chair of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and director of the Mayo Clinic chest wall and thoracic surgery program, the largest volume adult pectus treatment site in North America. She has performed over 1,200 pectus operations. She has one of the world's largest intraoperative echocardiogram databases and research programs detailing the cardiopulmonary effects of pectus deformities. Her research has improved patient care by providing an understanding of the effects of pectus deformities on the heart and mediastinal structures. Dr. Jaroszewski also studies the health improvements that pectus surgery provides.
