SUMMARY

Summary

The research of Adam K. Jacob, M.D., stems from an interest in improving the quality and safety of regional anesthesia. Though modern anesthesia techniques are inherently safe, rare complications occur. Learning more about what increases a patient's risk of complications, such as nerve injury, and applying best medical practices will help change the management of patient care during and after surgery and ultimately lead to a better experience throughout the perioperative period.

Focus areas

  • Evaluation of adverse events (for example, neurological complications) during and after surgery
  • Utilization of medical informatics to research adverse perioperative outcomes
  • Application of multidisciplinary, evidence-based clinical protocols in patients undergoing surgery

Significance to patient care

The perioperative period can be a very vulnerable time for patients undergoing surgery. The specialty of anesthesia has been lauded for efforts to improve quality and patient safety, but the process is never ending. Despite the safety of modern anesthesia and surgical techniques, rare complications occur and these complications may affect patient well-being and quality of life.

Dr. Jacob strives to work with health care providers who take care of patients during all phases of a procedure, including surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists and others, in order to better understand those patients at risk of complications and apply the best evidence-based care to each patient. His ultimate goal is to minimize adverse events and enhance recovery after surgery.
