SUMMARY

Jason (Jay) H. Homme, M.D., has an interest in research related to resident and medical student educational outcomes as well as clinical research related to group A streptoccal (GAS) pharyngitis.

Focus areas

  • Strep throat. As a practicing general pediatrician, Dr. Homme has developed a research interest in the diagnosis and treatment of the common condition of group A streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis (strep throat). This is one of the most common reasons for the prescription of antibiotics in children, and accurate diagnosis can lead to judicious use of antibiotics.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Homme has conducted some research and quality work looking at polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for GAS pharyngitis. Future goals are to develop improved strategies for accuracy in testing to limit unnecessary use of health care resources.

Additionally, as program director for the Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine Residency at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Homme aspires to provide the highest quality training experience possible for the pediatricians of tomorrow. Through evaluation of current training strategies, the field of medical education can improve and thus result in improved patient care outcomes for future generations of patients.
