Hogan.Marie@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Research conducted by nephrologist Marie C. Hogan, M.D., Ph.D., focuses on polycystic kidney disease (PKD) and liver disease. Dr. Hogan's research has included identifying altered genes in these diseases and studying the expression and function of their encoded proteins. Dr. Hogan also studies the epidemiology of these kidney and liver conditions and conducts clinical trials of new treatments.

Using mass spectrometry, Dr. Hogan cataloged proteins in vesicles of people both with and without autosomal dominant PKD. She and her colleagues are studying how these proteins change in these conditions and how to isolate and better characterize them. These observations could provide a rationale for diagnostic tests and a method to study these proteins and evaluate new treatments.

In collaboration with the Cholangiopathies Laboratory of Nicholas F. LaRusso, M.D., Dr. Hogan found that octreotide targeting cyclic nucleotide metabolism in liver tissue reduces liver volumes in people with severe polycystic liver disease and decreases kidney growth.

Focus areas

  • Discovering new medicines for polycystic kidney and liver diseases.
  • Using artificial intelligence to evaluate sclerotherapy to manage cystic kidney and liver diseases.
  • Improving genetic testing for hereditary kidney conditions.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Hogan's studies address the clinical challenges of treating polycystic liver diseases and PKD and and other rare kidney conditions. Findings from Dr. Hogan's studies are providing insights for developing novel diagnostic tools and therapeutic strategies.
