SUMMARY

Shahrukh K. Hashmi, M.D., studies cancer survivorship and late effects of blood and marrow transplantation. This includes physical and psychosocial illnesses that result as a late effect of chemotherapy or radiation. The translational aspect of Dr. Hashmi's research focuses on the biology of aging in cancer survivors. Dr. Hashmi's interests also include development of novel agents for treatment of graft-versus-host disease.

Focus areas

• Cancer survivorship. Dr. Hashmi's work focuses on identifying and management of late complications of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. His current work in the field of blood and marrow transplant survivorship focuses on research for the need and improvement in development of multidisciplinary survivorship clinics.
• Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). Dr. Hashmi has been involved in clinical trials for the development of new drugs for GVHD. He is also focusing on developing conditioning regimens for blood and marrow transplantation for the prevention of GVHD.
• Accelerated aging in cancer survivors. Dr. Hashmi's research involves lab-based strategies to evaluate the premature aging process (senescence) in cancer survivors.

Significance to patient care

Currently, millions of cancer survivors and blood and marrow transplant (BMT) survivors face challenges due to toxic side effects of treatments for cancer. Dr. Hashmi's research on many late complications has helped in devising guidelines for treatment of late effects of BMT survivors.

As former director of the BMT Survivorship Clinic at Mayo Clinic, Dr. Hashmi's ultimate vision is the establishment of multidisciplinary survivorship clinics for post-transplant and post-cancer treatment care, so that patients are not lost in transition after finishing active treatments.
