Hansel.Stephanie@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Stephanie L. Hansel, M.D., M.S., has research interests in small bowel capsule endoscopy and small bowel imaging for gastrointestinal disorders. In addition, she is a member of the comprehensive gastroenterology group, the community gastroenterology group and the hospital gastroenterology group. Her vast clinical experience has also allowed her to publish on common clinical disorders.

Focus areas

Dr. Hansel has collaborated with other gastroenterologists and radiologists at Mayo Clinic to study the following conditions:

  • Small bowel bleeding. Dr. Hansel has completed several studies on the utility of various tests for diagnosing the source of small bowel bleeding.
  • Celiac disease. Dr. Hansel has published on imaging findings in collagenous sprue and refractory celiac disease.
  • Small bowel Crohn's disease.Dr. Hansel has published on multidisciplinary approaches to treat small bowel Crohn's disease, showing the benefit of gastrointestinal procedures as well as enterography techniques.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Hansel's research is helping to advance the care of patients with small bowel conditions. Traditionally, the small bowel has been difficult to assess due to its length. Her research shows how valuable radiologic imaging paired with small bowel video capsule endoscopy can be in patients with small bowel disorders. When clinicians have more accurate diagnoses, they are able to manage or treat patients' conditions more confidently.
