Hakaim.Albert@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Albert G. Hakaim, M.D., has been a pioneer in the development of stent grafts to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms. His participation in clinical trials involving carotid stenting have made him a subject matter expert in the field of cerebrovascular and aortic aneurysmal diseases. He also pursues research and has clinical interest in the use of stem cells to prevent arterial thickening after surgery, which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Focus areas

  • Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. Dr. Hakaim focuses on refining clinical techniques to expedite device delivery. He also maintains a registry of both commercially available and custom-made devices.
  • Mesenchymal stem cells for prevention of arterial hyperplasia. Dr. Hakaim's stem cell application studies have an FDA-approved investigational device exemption (IDE). He is currently recruiting patients with dialysis access fistulas for stem cell use evaluation.

Significance to patient care

Both of Dr. Hakaim's research initiatives aim to decrease patient recovery time and morbidity:

  • The endovascular repair of aortic aneurysms study is designed to compare long-term patient outcomes for a variety of devices.
  • The stem cell regenerative medicine project should improve fistula function and reduce the need for re-operation.
