SUMMARY

The research of Karen Grothe, Ph.D., L.P., has focused on psychological factors that influence health and health behaviors. In particular, she has examined psychosocial aspects of weight loss surgery, obesity and physical activity, especially those that predict outcome or influence adherence to medical recommendations.

The long-term goal of Dr. Grothe's research is to identify and influence psychological factors that affect obesity, weight loss and weight loss maintenance.

Focus areas

  • How can we help patients obtain the best possible outcome from weight loss surgery? Dr. Grothe is involved in research examining factors that can impede success after surgery, including impulsivity, alcohol abuse and food addiction. She is also working on research to identify the best ways to help people change behavior, both prior to surgery and if they experience weight regain after weight loss surgery.
  • What psychological and behavioral factors contribute to weight gain and obesity? Dr. Grothe has been examining psychological factors, such as distress tolerance (the ability to withstand negative emotions), confidence in ability to change eating habits and sedentary behavior, and how they affect weight, eating behavior and weight loss attempts.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Grothe's research aims to help patients prevent weight gain and be more successful with weight loss and weight loss maintenance by helping identify psychological and behavioral components to struggles with weight.
