SUMMARY

The research interests of Dina M. Gadalla, Ph.D., are focused on the development of biomaterials that have the capacity to enhance targeted cellular processes. Particularly, Dr. Gadalla focuses on improving the epithelial tissue-forming capacity and angiogenic potential of laryngeal and tracheal implants to produce functional tissue. In tackling research questions in this field, Dr. Gadalla prioritizes bridging the gaps between engineering, biology and medicine to translate and promote health care that is both more effective and personalized.

Focus areas

  • Regeneration of airway epithelium. Dr. Gadalla is particularly interested in the synthesis of a fibrous synthetic material that mimics biochemical processes (biomimetic material) to promote the migration and proliferation of epithelial cells and the eventual formation of airway epithelium.
  • Enhancing the vascularization of biomaterial implants. Dr. Gadalla and her colleagues are interested in using different biological factors to enhance the ability of implants to vascularize. Factors being investigated include exosomes, adipose-tissue derived microvascular fragments and stromal vascular fraction.
  • Improving surgical outcomes of rotator cuff repair. Dr. Gadalla, in collaboration with John M. Tokish, M.D., a Mayo Clinic orthopedic surgeon, aims to provide a tissue-engineered electrospun patch that smoothly transmits forces between connective tissue during rotator cuff repair.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Gadalla's work aims to improve patient care through the development and enhancement of biomaterials for enhanced treatment options. Dr. Gadalla's goal is to gain a deeper perspective into connecting the biological behavior of a tissue and the characteristics of biomaterials. Further, Dr. Gadalla aims to develop simplistic approaches that modify promising biological implants in ways that elicit suitable biological responses.
