SUMMARY

The research interests of Antonio J. Forte, M.D., Ph.D., M.S., focus on lymphedema, neuronal and skin regeneration, and reconstruction after breast cancer and melanoma. Dr. Forte is interested in the use of biomarkers to enhance diagnosis and predict prognosis in lymphedema, as well as new Theranostics techniques and individualized treatment algorithms that can lead to improved outcomes. Dr. Forte also leads the Plastic Surgery Outcomes Research Team and the Tissue Regeneration and Individualized Biomedical Engineering Laboratory at Mayo Clinic.

Focus areas

  • Tissue and imaging biomarkers that can predict response to microsurgical treatment
  • Regenerative medicine, specifically, the regeneration of skin and brain using adipose-derived stem cells
  • Implementation of new technologies, including augmented human intelligence, to improve patient experience and surgical outcomes
  • Quality of life in survivors of breast cancer, especially in those who develop lymphedema
  • Disparities in access to health care among people with breast cancer or melanoma

Significance to patient care

Dr. Forte's research searches for ways to promote brain, nerve and skin healing using stem cells. He also looks for ways to improve surgical outcomes for survivors of breast cancer, including those who develop lymphedema.
