Fagan.Andrew@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research of Andrew J. Fagan, Ph.D., is focused on the development of advanced imaging techniques using ultrahigh-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), such as 7-tesla MRI (7T MRI). Dr. Fagan has authored more than 90 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and book chapters in his field of study.

Focus areas

  • Development of parallel transmit techniques for body imaging applications at 7 Tesla
  • Development of deuterium metabolic imaging techniques at 7 Tesla
  • Development of radiofrequency coils for use with 7T MRI, using physical measurements and electromagnetic simulations to ensure their safe use
  • Exploring options to decrease scan times using advanced image acquisition acceleration techniques
  • Investigating the use of 7T MRI for pre-surgical planning in collaboration with the research team of Kendall H. Lee, M.D., Ph.D., at Mayo Clinic

Significance to patient care

Although only a handful are installed in hospitals worldwide, 7T MRI scanners represent the highest magnetic field in use today for imaging patients with MRI. The high field allows for image acquisition with unsurpassed quality, but only in the brain and knee for some patients. Dr. Fagan's research is aimed at expanding access to this exciting technology to all patients, reducing scan times and improving image quality.
