ElTers.Mireille@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Mireille El Ters, M.D., has a primary research interest in the prevention and management of recurrent post-transplantation glomerular diseases. Dr. El Ters has also taken special interest in the genetic basis for kidney transplantation with the goal of correlating genetic results with the clinical presentation of renal diseases to provide recommendations to help guide the clinical care of patients. Dr. El Ters focuses on transplant recipients with diagnoses of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) with underlying genetic mutations that could explain their presentation and that would have impact on post-transplant outcomes as well as choice of potential donors if blood related.

Focus areas

  • Recurrent disease in kidney transplantation
  • Glomerular diseases
  • Genetic causes of kidney disease

Significance to patient care

Glomerular diseases account for a significant proportion of kidney transplants. Unfortunately, patients with certain forms of glomerular diseases are at risk of post-transplant recurrence, which impacts the longevity of the transplant. Dr. El Ters' research focuses on understanding the risk factors for recurrence of certain kidney diseases (including FSGS) with the ultimate goal of identifying effective therapy to prevent recurrence and treat it appropriately. Dr. El Ters' interest in evaluating the underlying genetic causes of kidney disease may help with choice of donor if blood related.
