Dy.Benzon@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Benzon M. Dy, M.D., studies diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. His work aims to improve outcomes and optimize surgical interventions for patients with endocrine diseases and cancers.

Dr. Dy is studying patient outcomes in hyperparathyroidism and thyroid malignancies, as well as the management of hormonal excess in patients with tumors of the adrenal gland.

Focus areas

  • Hyperparathyroidism. Dr. Dy studies patients with elevation in parathyroid function caused by renal failure or unknown mechanisms. His active work looks at quality of life outcomes and the impact of elevated parathyroid hormone levels on bone mineral density and renal function.
  • Thyroid cancer. Dr. Dy investigates alternative approaches to aggressive surgery for locoregional and metastatic differentiated thyroid cancers such as papillary and follicular carcinoma.
  • Adrenal disease. Dr. Dy studies the effects of excessive hormone production from the adrenal glands and surgical options to manage disease sequelae. He also has an interest in recurrent and metastatic adrenocortical carcinoma.

Significance to patient care

Through his research, Dr. Dy hopes to create novel approaches to treat diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal glands. Although aggressive surgery has been the gold standard for these diseases, he looks at other options that aim to preserve quality of life while removing the potential risk associated with endocrinopathies.
