Dunlay.Shannon@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Shannon M. Dunlay, M.D., M.S., is a heart failure cardiologist and health services researcher with expertise in secondary data analysis and community-based patient engagement studies. Dr. Dunlay's work broadly focuses on examining the factors that impact health care utilization and outcomes in patients with heart failure.

Focus areas

  • Health care utilization and outcomes in heart failure. Dr. Dunlay leverages use of community epidemiologic studies and large national data sets to examine the epidemiology of heart failure and to determine the factors that impact quality of life, hospitalization and mortality.
  • Multimorbidity, frailty and geriatric syndromes. Dr. Dunlay studies how the development of geriatric syndromes, such as multimorbidity and frailty, impact the natural history and outcomes of patients with heart failure, including those with advanced therapies such as left ventricular assist devices (LVAD).
  • Palliative and end-of-life care in patients with advanced heart failure. Dr. Dunlay studies how patients with advanced heart failure make decisions about their care, and to determine how the health care system can more optimally provide goal-aligned care for patients with advanced heart failure and their caregivers.

Significance to patient care

Heart failure affects millions of Americans and imposes a large burden on patients, families and society. Dr. Dunlay's hope is that her research will help identify better ways to meet the needs of patients with heart failure and the needs of their loved ones.
