DeMartino.Randall@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research of Randall R. De Martino, M.D., centers on characterizing and improving the delivery of care for patients with vascular disease. Diseases of the vascular system present complex surgical problems and extensive comorbid disease burdens, such as heart disease. Dr. De Martino's research primarily focuses on identifying, understanding and decreasing the variability of care and translating this research into improved outcomes.

Focus areas

  • Comparative effectiveness. The effectiveness of new and alternative treatment options for vascular disease is an area of study. Often, data comparing standard open and minimally invasive approaches for vascular disease is lacking. This research aims to utilize existing data with the addition of claims-based analysis to perform comparative effectiveness studies to improve patient and treatment selection.
  • Quality improvement. Another focus is the development of quality regional groups of vascular specialists. The goal is to analyze current care to improve the treatment and outcomes of patients undergoing vascular surgery. This aim is to improve the outcomes for all patients locally, regionally and nationally through collaborative efforts here at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and beyond.
  • Epidemiological evaluation of vascular disease. Evaluation of epidemiological trends and natural history data remains limited within many vascular diseases. Dr. De Martino's involvement with the Rochester Epidemiology Project continues to inform vascular specialists nationally to improve knowledge of disease trends and implications for long-term outcomes.

Significance to patient care

Understanding the variation of care with vascular disease translates directly to better results and fewer complications. Variability in care may also identify areas for future research to inform decision-making and treatment selection.
